The pain is real. The fear is not.

The pain is real, because we are not in our place. Nothing is in its place.
It is called exile, and so there is pain.
It is that angst of being in the wrong place that lifts us higher, beyond this place.

The fear is not real, because no matter where we are, our G‑d is still with us.

The only thing we have to fear is that we may no longer feel the pain.

Great thought! Thank you for this explanation that helps us to better understand some of the reasoning behind the feelings of displacement in our souls and why we feel pain and how to appreciate pain more while releasing fear.
thank you.

To ACTUALLY
Bs"D Certain depressions require antidepressive medications. Not all depressions can be lumped into one basket as helping people to avoid fear and pain. A competent psychologist or psychiatrist can tell the difference. It is critical to know the difference, so that people who need the antidepressive medication will not go without it.

pain of exile
this all seems like a rationalization to me. I have been feeling distant to G-d for a while now and for a baal shuva, that's weird, but I think G-d is acting and has acted like an abusive father. There are too many good people who are struggling and too much evil happenings in the world (past and present) for me to think G-d is so good anymore.
I try, but lately, it's not working for me on a lot of levels. I'd love you to comment on that. Thanks.

Only because I start receiving and reading your web site that I know today is the first of Av. Honestly, do not know even the date not talking about the history. Or we read the Scripture but nobody in my company talks about the death of Aaron. This must be a condition you refer to as "not feel the pain", so numb, so ignorant, so indifferent... So, thank you, I will not fear, my G-d never leaves me or forsakes me.

If unexiled ....
"The only thing we have to fear is that we may no longer feel the pain."

But why should we fear no longer feeling the pain? Wouldn't it mean we are no longer in exile? And wouldn't that be a good thing?

Daily Dose
I want to thank the author for writing the Daily Dose. The complexity and simplicity of the truths he offers for consideration is always nourishment for my mind and spirit. Where can I obtain more of his writing and/or hear him speak?

Oh, that's why!
Hi Norbert. My sister suffers from the same condition and it be quite convincing. Just after I read this quote, I cried in prayer saying "G-d, I know it's not real but darn it hurts! It hurts!" After that bit of spiritual breakdown I woke up with some vague answer to a deep spiritual question. What I've learned from studying the Torah is this. That our deepest suffering is the cup of our highest potential. The gaping void is the mirror image of our highest peak, our mountain. The deeper the void, the highest the potential for light. (meaning knowing, awareness, empowerment)

You are made of a teaspoonful of stardust, you glow in darkness....these are all scientific facts.

If you are made of light and you radiate light, then you are not swallowed by darkness, rather, you went there valiantly to light it up! Hard to believe, but--yeah that's what the mystics said the Shekina did. It went in darkness so that G-d could find it. It's a cosmic hide and seek thing.
