Do-It-Yourself Lawyer

As thinking human beings, we have an unlimited capacity to find excuses, to discover ingenious and innovative ways to distance the perpetrator from the act.

We can blame it on youth, on old age, on parents, on children, on financial hardships, daily environs, psychological state. We can easily discharge anybody of any responsibility for any negative deeds that stain their hands. We can all be wonderful advocates and lawyers for one another -- and the Merciful One Above surely enjoys it.

But if you want to get ahead in life, don't be a lawyer for yourself.

Do-it Yourself Lawyer
Henck from N.Y. tells it like it is. I agree.
Lawyers, in my opinion, are satan's gift to humanity here on earth.
BTY I need an honest Personal Injury Attorney.

too literal
THis "lawyer" thing is being taken too literally. I know that it is a metaphor here, that we should cut others the slack we should not cut for ourselves because it can be construed as a form of generosity, but, then again, since when is it a kiddush Hashem to be a poster child for moral ambiguity? We can render thoughtful judgement, judgement tempered by Torah values and common sense. Or are you advocating Jesus's "Let he is without sin chuck for first stone..."?

Re: Do It Yourself Lawyer
The Corporate World often rewards the Do It Yourself Lawyer as long as there is substance to back up "excuse tickets". The language spoken in business is not similar to spriritual language, and this is not intended to be an excuse for less than truths used to achieve.
How do we survive in "The Real World without a bit of The Do It Youself Lawyer in Us?" Why can't we honor G-D and do what it takes to survive as well?

Do-It-Yourself Lawyer
unfortunately in this self service world of achievement, many who need help are left to fend for themselves and in many cases to defend themselves when they are oppressed, truly, who comes to their aid who doesn’t first have their hand out to be filled? a social society that prides its self on spreading Freedoms and Individual Liberties, yet many who are impoverished due to yokes placed upon them and told they have no excuse for ‘backsliding’ as the many others who refuse to help them. many times they are those unable to afford adequate guidance to undo what they did in the eyes of Justice, a Justice that seeks with a vengeance to make examples out of them. interestingly, many are given unqualified, and inexperienced Legal aid that simply can’t compete with the wit of a well seasoned Prosecutor who seeks to notch his belt and this places disadvantages on the disfranchised people who feel they are thrown into positions to becoming their own Lawyer having to interpret a maze of Laws.

Do-it-Yourself-Lawyer
A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Thus saith Abraham Lincoln, a century before the Rebbe.

As thinking human beings, we have an unlimited capacity to find excuses, to discover ingenious and innovative ways to distance... (ourselves) from the act, and when we fall back upon mercy and grace and beleive we are forgiven for breeching our covenants, (adultery, coveting, oppressing, etc) the grace we receive that allows us to act in such ways, we are told to reflect towards those who are treated unfairly or denied justice burdened by these acts that we inflict upon them, so when they slip up under the wieght of unjust burdens, they are told by those who receive such grace that allows them to be forgiven for their deliberate breeches that "life is not fair deal with it" and as we are all instucted to give this grace to the needy and help them, many prefer to seek punish against them thus hatching them into venomous snakes, thus a society of corrupt natures excusing their behavior and singing about their blessings

Ethics of the Fathers 1:14
Generally, I agree that it is best not to be a lawyer for oneself, in the ideal situation, this is not desireable.

But when others do not advocate for us (and here, I speak of in the secular world), we have no choice but to advocate for and defend ourselves, and, in these cases, we must be our own lawyers, as well.

There are also times in life when such is necessary and appropriate....

Hillel says "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself then who am I? If not now, when?" (Ethics of the Fathers 1:14)

Ultimately, G-d is not only our judge, but also our advocate in our time of need...and when we seek guidance and resolution of any situation, including any negative act for which we must take responsibility, we turn to Him not only as our judge, but also as our lawyer, as well...

In the end, we plead our case to G-d, and He pleads for us, and arbiters justice in the world.
