Why do chupah escorts hold candles?

Question:

At a recent orthodox wedding that I attended, the bride & the groom were escorted to the chupah by their parents. Both sets of parents were carrying candles.

What is the significance of the candles?

Answer:

One explanation given for this custom is that the candles are reminiscent of the flickering light and fire which occurred at the time of the giving of the Torah--the marriage between G‑d (the groom) and Israel (the bride)--beneath the "chupah" (wedding canopy) of Mount Sinai.
