Book Title Bringing Heaven Down to Earth

177. Escape

Man, on his own, cannot reach higher than his own fingertips.
He cannot break out of his own skin;
he cannot lift himself up by pulling at his own hair;
all of his achievements are tied to his ego;
all that he may comprehend is defined by his own subjective perception.

He is a prisoner by virtue of existence.

So G‑d threw Man a rope:
He gave him tasks to fulfill that are beyond his grasp;
thoughts to fathom that take him outside the hollow of his subjective universe.

All that is needed is his willingness to leave himself.

We are all prisoners. But we sit on the keys.

Man can lift himself up by pulling at his own hair
Man can "lift himself up by pulling at his own hair."

He simply grows his hair long enough, and then throws it over a fixed horizontal rod, or better yet, a pulley, and pulls down on the end. If he is not strong enough to pull his own weight, then, he can construct a complex pulley (a series of simple pulleys) to give himself a mechanical advantage. This reduces the force with which he needs to pull and the force on his scalp. For example, if he has his hair pass back and forth 10 times between pulleys on his belt and pulleys fixed over his head, then it becomes very easy to pull on his hair and lift himself.

Ironically, what prevents him from doing this is that he is a prisoner of his false belief that he cannot do life himself without G-d's help, and that he does not have enough of an ego to accept that he is capable of finding a solution to his problems on his own.

So how do we leave ourselves?

Escape or Reurn
We all exist here with both spiritual and physical natures. It is the physical which confines and limits us and creates opportunities for inappropriate conduct. It also isolates us from others and fosters selfishness the basis for misconduct.

We need to transcend the physical through faith and knowing the words and ways of the LORD. Eventually, the physical passes, and we re-join HIM at Abraham's side.

This process is not an "escape" but rather a "return" which is a primary purpose on earth. Rejoice!
