Be a Star in His-Story


The Torah, in the Book of Genesis, makes an outlandish assertion. It says that G-d created man in His image. What's that supposed to mean?

G-d created man in His image in the same way that an author creates all his characters in his image. Each character in the story expresses a different aspect of the author. Even the interaction between the characters is in some way an unfolding of the truth of the author.

On the other hand, there are other characters that the author doesn't identify with. Every good story has an antagonist, a villain. Every good book has a problem character who creates all the tension. Why is that character there? Because the villain plays the essential role of bringing out the inner selves of all the other characters. That's an important role. The role of the evil people in the story is to help the good people in the story reveal their deepest selves, demonstrate extraordinary courage, tremendous fortitude, new commitment, etc.

Every good book has an antagonist, a villain who creates all the tension. Why is that character there? The antagonist in every story is actually providing the opportunities for the other characters to make great choices that embody great goodness. The villain is actually serving the best interest of all the other characters, and, of course, the author (who the story is really all about).

Therefore every character is serving the author. However, some characters are serving the author directly, as direct expressions of himself into the world he created. And some are serving the author indirectly--by creating opportunities for others to be of direct service.

This is the essence of all choices of every character. To serve or not to serve is not the question, and it is not the choice. Every character serves the author. The choice is only about how you serve--directly, playing the good guy, or indirectly, playing the villain.

And what difference does it make if you serve directly or indirectly? It really does not make a difference to the author--his story will be written. But it sure does make a difference to you, the character. Your choices not only determine the outcome of your final scene but also the quality of your life throughout the whole story.

As we all know, the good guys win in the end. Sure, they might lose some battles along the way but they always win the war. However, even when they appear to be losing, often they are really winning, because in every moment of their struggle they achieve personal transformation and enjoy a profound sense of identification with the author. This is not the case for the villain. Worse than the great demise that awaits him in the final scene is the pain he suffers daily. His soul is alienated from its Divine Source and his inner world has no connection with G-d and is therefore void of any lasting value or meaning.

It's about who you are, why you are, who is G-d and why He creates... Now we have a better understanding of the true meaning of "serving G-d" or not "serving G-d." Generally, when you pick up the Torah, and you read about serving G-d, you may feel put off. Why would I want to serve G-d? Be servile? It seems kind of demeaning. But if you're a character in the story, how could you not want to serve the author? It's who you are. And it's the greatest honor in the world.

What does it mean to serve the author directly? It means that I am a vehicle for the expression of the author into his story. The more I serve the author, the more the author's presence permeates my very being, and the more I discover that I am actually a spark of the author and I play a role in HIStory. It's not about obedience. It's about self-expression. It's about who you are, why you are, who is G-d and why He creates.

When G-d offered the Torah and it's commandments to the Jewish people they recognized that the Great Author of life was presenting them not only Holy Scripture but the Script of for daily life. Without hesitation they responded, "We will do it." They understood that the Torah was, is, and always will be the guiding force of the universe at the core of all being. They realized that the principles and the commandments of the Torah empower them to play the best part, be all we can be, serve and experience our story as part of His-Story.

One Page At A Time
It's about who you are, why you are, who is G-d and why He creates.

Feels pretty great to be a part of the worlds best ever litterary masterpeice, one that allows a miraculous dynamic to seem as naturual as the summer, winter, spring seasons that are all star events in the cosmic rotation of the outer chapter of the inner galaxy. However unlike the wonderful worlds of sublime order that scream mathematical perfection, I am only human and I can not easily sense the divine life force of my esential being and so with all of my force with every bone in my body
I cry out AYEKOA- where are you
On a good day I might just get an answer that usually tells me: I am always with you.

Now I just need to know what to do, good thing I have a Tanya and can read our story one chapter at a time.

HIS-Story
Thank you so much for this article. When I was a freshman in high school, we studied the short story. Unlike a novel, a short story has one main plot and all characters, action, etc. have meaning and all lead to the climax of the story. I thought, this is like G-d's creation. I don't always understand the intricacies, but I am convinced that everything was put there by G-d and it is there for a purpose.

One question I have for the author, or for anyone who might comment: what about the goyim? I am not Jewish but love G-d. I hope I am not automatically counted as a villain.

Your words, like light that would penetrate the void of darkness of so many memories lost or made forgotten. Yes it is, i recognize that, that guiding force, of the universe, at least, my univrese. So be it, express yourself, in a full scale dialogue to His creation and to Him.

The article should have accounted for the fact we often come up with our own story and call it His Story. We interpret G-d and in so doing turn Him into a character in our story. In short, we are incapable of understanding beyond ourselves but by bringing up G-d, we make ourselves feel in possession of absolute knowledge. Human (ethnic/cultural/etc) centric view of the world makes an irresponsible claims to the power of judgement. That this view is bound to fail is obvious when it's premises are allowed and encouraged to change over the span of time. Of course, Jewish faith is not about human-centric view of the world, a.k.a, Hellenism. That's why Jews keep Mitzvahs without understanding their meaning. And that's my point about only shortcoming about this article. When you are a protagonist in His Story, you need not know why thers's a villain or that you will win in the end. Has that not been the faith of your forefathers?

Kabbalat Ol?
B"H. I would like to say that this article is very well written and it's very pleasant to read. The only problem that I find is that it says that we serve G-d out of "self-expresion". This view seems to run contrary to the principle of Kabbalat Ol Malchut Shamayim. We serve G-d not for reward and not because it benefits us and not because it makes us feel good and not because it's better for us in the long run. We serve G-d because G-d wants us to serve him. There is no "self" expresion, Ich ist Ichy, remember. There is no "self" there is only G-d.
