Advice from the Rebbe's namesake, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, the "Tzemach Tzedek":

Determine how much you need to provide for your family needs. Then put a bucket just the right size out in the rain—meaning, get into a business that can make that sum of money. Next, pray for compassion.

compassion
Asking for compassion is like asking God to shine His Face upon us. When He shines His Face upon us, what else can we ask for? His Light will empower everything to work out. Everything will just fall into place.

Can you spell out for me where the compassion comes in. Do you mean compassion from G-d; that he should spare us from illness and other disasters or do you mean that we should have compassion for others to make us richer in our souls or do you mean that others should have compassion for us so that they help us to earn a living and live a pleasent life surrounded by caring?

Money.
The most important is the last part, to pray for compassion.
