305. Fixed Time

If you're serious about something, it has a fixed time. If you're earnest about getting something done and the phone rings, you ignore it.

The spiritual side of your life is not a hobby nor a luxury --it is your purpose of existence. When you are learning Torah, or meditating or in prayer, nothing else exists.

Your spiritual career should have at least equal priority to your worldly career.

upside the head
I was passing thru the site erev shabbos and the lead sentence hit me so hard I had to back button to read the full quote.
amazing how the simple most common sense thought is often the most elusive to put into practice. Thanks for a great thought from the Rebbe.

Very true!

It is very true. I totally agree. Thanks a lot!

well now...so you are studying,in full earnest....and a baby cries in the next room. One has to think like Jacob at times...take care of my world and then you will be my "Almighty".

What makes you say we don't answer the phone when we're working? If I'm doing lesson plans or grading papers, I do answer the phone, although I know it will be totally irrelevant to work.

Of course I don't do anything else in the middle of a prayer. And I learn with my study partner on the phone, and ignore the beep (if there is one). So I guess I'm doing what you say and then some.

I see these others also answer the phone while working. Really, if we're home, we answer the phone. Only for G-d's sake do we abstain from answering.

So you see, we do treat G-d as much more important than working.

Spiritual world
I remember once it was thundering and lightning out side and the phone rang. I picked it up and said hello and felt an intense stirring of energy in the back of my head.
There was no voice on the phone.

just the reverse for me!
I work from home. Nine times out of ten when the phone rings I will answer - even if it is a complete distraction from work.

When I am learning daf yomi or praying, the phone goes off. I wouldn't even think of having it on. Can you just imagine the scene : a person standing in the presence of G-d when their phone goes off. "Oh, sorry G-d, I have to take this." Nobody would even think of doing this!

Thanks for the reminder
I am not sure why it seems easier to push aside our spiritual necessaties quicker than our physical. But it is true, an appointment is an appointment. And for sure an appointment to meet with our Father, our King, should not be delayed, interupted or broken.

Children
It is important to note, though that if a baby is crying during your study of torah...even during the holiest of prayers...you MUST stop your prayer to answer the cry of a child.

A little something to remind us that the health of the home (children, family, shalom bayit) is perhaps the holiest thing of all.
