303. Teacher

A student begins as a sponge or as a funnel:
Either everything is absorbed, indiscriminately
--or everything passes in one ear and out the other.

The first job of a teacher, therefore, is to direct the student and tell him, "Focus on this, this is important. Do not focus on this --this is only the background."

A Certain Center
Dear Rabbi,
A teacher from a certain group told me that studying the Sefirots is not important. I never quite forgave him for it. I felt lied to and used and generally misled. How can the basis of Kabbalah itself not be important in the study of Kabbalah? Why is he teaching me mitzvot and when I tell ask him about Sefirots he says at first that I'm a capricorn and it's dangerous for me to learn it because my worldly nature--and then later tell my husband that even he doesn't delve into it. (In other words, he doesn't know what it is?)And then I found your site and you give this knowledge openly. LIke--it's basic knowledge!

The study of the Sefirots gave me the most important breakthroughs. I observe it at work in nature and my life and it assures me I am headed towards something good even when it seems to get really really bad. Most importantly, I have helped other people through rough patches using this knowledge.

My point is, if I didn't question the motives of my teacher, I would never have found Chabad. Lots of good stemmed from this act of rebellion. Had I listened to everything that that teacher was telling me to do ,just because that's what he called himself--a teacher, I would have been a drone to his contribution quota and never found my own place in the grand scheme of things.

I think it's healthy to ask why. Good students should.

Just as teachers should abuse a student's trust.

Good thing, I am totally convinced Chabad is the place to learn about the Torah. You have never failed me.
