The Atheist

The atheist, too, has a god, and it is himself.

The idolater at least understands there is something greater than him, something beyond the grasp of his physical senses, some external forces to which he is subject.

But for the atheist, all the universe is defined by his own understanding, all ethics are subject to his approval and even he himself is an artifact of his own mind. He is a self-made man, for he creates his own universe and squeezes himself inside it.

Exist Shmexist
RAbbi Tzvi Freeman is the one who wrote this article. He mentions Rambam's opinion making us all "atheists" since we cannot say that Gd "exists"--existence being a property of things in thisworld and Gd is beyond this world, beyond space and time.

HOWEVER, we can say that Gd is real, and that Gd's reality is the ONLY reality. "Ayn Od." There is NOTHING else but Gd.

Our own "reality'" is contingent on Gd's. I.e., if we want to be real, we can do so only via partaking of Gd's reality.

Who are we to judge
I think true belief in G-d is a thing that grabs the heart and pushes you into action. Passive belief in G-d is just the brain rattling off somebody else's passion. Until we sit passively in our cushioned seats we are all atheists, worshipping ourselves.

response
Thank you to Chana bas Leah and Tzvi Freeman for mentioning in their further explanations the divinity of all souls and recognizing that people who are atheists are seeking out truth. I believe that our words can be very powerful especially if they reflect disrespect or condescension. With all of these further clarifications and historical references, I now have a clearer picture. Thank you for taking the time.
