190. The Third Path

Each path contains what the other is missing: When G‑dliness is everything, even the darkness is included. But the world is left unchanged, because there is no world --only G‑dliness.

When everything is G‑dliness, you transform the world by digging away the darkness to find the sparks of G‑dliness. But the darkness remains piled up outside.

The path of Jacob is to find That Which Is Everything within each thing, and to bring That Which Is Beyond All Things to dwell within each thing. Jacob knows a G‑d who is at once both beyond and within.
To Jacob, darkness is also light.

The peanut
This reminds me of the story of George Washing Carver. He prayed most earnestly that G-d would show him the mysteries of the universe. In response, G-d told him to go study the peanut. This response was interpreted by some to say,"Oh, little man, you can't know the secrets of the universe. Go study the peanut instead." But I believe that G-d was delighted with the request. Because all is G-dliness, the secrets of the universe can be found in the simple peanut. How blessed was Mr. Carver to be given this work of discovering G-d!
