165. Leaving Egypt

The biblical slavery of Egypt represents bondage to your own self.

Every day, every moment, must be an exodus from the self.

If you’re not leaving Egypt, you’re already back there.

Self defined
Perhaps leaving oneself means to stop focusing on the self and start focusing on G-d and Mitzvot. Selfhood is only significant when engaged in meaningful and sacred service.

leaving egypt
Very thought-provoking and personal growth-evoking! Surely, many people are 'prisoners' of one thing or another - i.e. habits like smoking, etc. or emotional - i.e. fear, jealousy, need to control, etc. (at least I feel these are a few things that can feel like imprisonment). I was an extremely heavy smoker; and one time years ago, the rabbi brought this subject up one Shabbos, and I've always remembered it - how, when something controls us, we are prisoners of it, I quit 20 years ago. What freedom! This, to me, is a reminder to continually work on these issues that hinder freedom.

Exodus from Egypt
I found this to be confusing. In Judaism we were always taught, in so many words, ..."to thine own self be true." But, according to my understanding of this "Daily Dose", I'd find this to be a "command" to leave ourselves behind, just as our ancestors left Egypt behind, to escape slavery, to become the Jewish peoples. So, to think of this "Dose", so many things come to mind that I feel a bit of "chaos" within. Perhaps it means that I must "leave Egypt (myself?) in a sense, as I say the Hashkivenu (sp?) at bedtime? Perhaps I "leave myself/Egypt" just as I turn my "soul" over to G-d while sleeping. But in the morning, I must leave "myself/Egypt" again, as I greet the day with thanks to Hashem for allowing me to move once again from sleep and actively choose to leave Egypt behind as I transform myself from "slavery" to the person I know I am and can be, and choose to leave "Egypt " just as I choose to move from darkness to daylight.

Leaving Egypt
Remember only 2 from those who left Egypt entered the land becuase of their stubborn hearts. Only Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised land.Even Moses was arrogant when he struck the rock and was refused entry. Even Moses was not able to fully obey what G-d commanded, but He promised to pour out His spirit in the last days may the veil be lifted as we turn to the Lord for we have all sinned and fallen short in some way haven't we. In Numbers 34 the land was allotted as an inheritance to the Israelites - so who are we to give it away? The Lord says never again will my land be divided into two Nations, so no Palestinian state then? May the veil be stripped off the eyes of those who think it;s ok to give away the land G-d promised. His word is truth isn't it?

It took 40 days to come out of Egypt and it took 40 years for Egypt to come out of them.and this is what is more important.

Being Paradox

By Tzvi Freeman

Don't be "this". Don't let them define you. If you catch yourself fitting into a definition, contradict it. Never travel a single road.
