Tzitzit for Cheap!

A Conversation Between Two Souls

The famed chasidic rabbi and mentor, Rabbi Yitzchak Gurevitch, popularly known as Itche der Masmid ("the Assiduous")1, told the following story:

Two souls met midway between heaven and earth. One was descending to begin life on this earth; the other had just departed a body and was ascending to heaven to reunite with its Source.

"Nu, what can you tell me about the world I am about to enter?" asks the descending soul.

"Well, one thing I can tell you is that for two kopeks [a minuscule amount] one can purchase tzitzit!"

"Wow!" exclaims the descending soul, "tzitzit for two kopeks! I can't wait!"

"Not so fast," says the ascending soul, "wait until you see what you have to do to earn two kopeks."

FOOTNOTES
1.

Rabbi Yitzchak (c.1890-1941) earned this moniker due to his tendency to learn for many hours on end. He was a disciple of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, legendary for his holiness and extraordinary piety. He was murdered by the Nazis, may their names be blotted out, in Riga, Latvia.

Wake up Rachel, Your talking about this day!!!
Many people still have no health insurance, work long hours and work six days a week.

I suppose we really do live in the Good Ole Days then...

Same as the earlier part of last century
I have heard people talk about the good old days, relating the cost of a loaf of bread, a qt of milk. Checking the cost of living in '43, the year I was born, a gal of gas was 15 cents, a bottle of Coco Cola 5 cents, you could rent a house for $40/month. However, the average wages were $2000/yr. Ir's always best to put things in their proper perspective when pining for the "good old days." Many people had no health insurance, they worked longer hours, and worked six days a week.
