Just as some people refuse to see their faults, so there are those who insist on digging too deep, persecuting themselves over every fault and making unreasonable demands upon their lives. Eventually they collapse from exhaustion, or worse, kick back with resentment.

This is why no person should go it alone. Everyone needs a mentor, someone who can look objectively and say, “This is where you are right now. This is what you can expect from yourself right now.”

This is me. I cannot cite the exact example for it would not be appropriate for this column.
It would be a question for a Rabbi, in a one to one conversation, to discuss fully and give me a response to my question.

The Mentor
I once heard a beautiful wisdom from a comedian on a talk show. They said that everyone should have an audience cheering for them when they come in to work. A standing ovation when you arrive and when you leave.

Imagine how differently you'd see yourself and your work - or your life for that matter, if you had someone cheering you on every step of the way. This I believe is one of the purposes of the Modeh Ani but a mentor would be a wonderful place to get those cheers. When we feel appreciated, we find strength and inspiration and motivation to do that which is innate ... to be all of who we are ... to be the best of who we are.

Mentor
These words of advice remind us that common sense is not always commen.
I needed to hear this and I thank you for helping us to help ourselves, paradoxically that in fact we may need someone else to show us a healthier perspective.
