Mundanity, holiness, and beyond -- a study of the spiritual significance of the Shemittah and Jubilee cycles
Dear Chabad,
Thank you for everything you do.

In the beauty of all of the "sevens" in Judaism, does not the Talmud almost mention that there are seven heavens? Please help refresh my memory.
|
The Talmud (Chagiga 12b) does indeed mention that there are seven Heavens.

I have always wondered, and now more than ever since I have now lived for 50 years, if there is/are any writtings about the relationship of the individual to the shemitta / yovel cycle. Seems to me that there are learning opportunities in each of our previous 7 year cycles culminating in the liberation of the 50th year. I am looking for guidance in this area and anyone's thoughts or advice are invited .

This article is a blessing. Thank you. The teachings in my life have contained an aspect of the seven year cycles for the individual. They occur in sets of three. The first 21 years of birth and growth, the second set of three seven year cycles of productivity and family.... and so on. There is more info out there. I am interested in learning more of the Jewish wisdom in this area. I will check back. Shalom.

I am wondering why the trumpet was sounded for Jubillee on the 10th day, which is also the day of Yom Kippur. Does the jubilee year start on that day: the 10th?
|
It has been suggested that the Jubilee horn is blown on Yom Kippur because the theme of the Jubilee is identical to that of Yom Kippur. Jubilee is the time when ancestral fields are returned and slaves go back home. Yom Kippur is the time when we return to our original roots, to G-d and to our people. About when the Jubilee actually started, the year began on Rosh Hashanah. However, we read that from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur the slaves neither worked nor returned to their masters. Rather they ate drank and made merry. When the horn blew on Yom Kippur, the slaves returned home, and the fields were returned to their original owners.
