Why do you use fancy words when a simple word will do? At our public seder I asked over 40 people what "sojourn" means. Not one of them knew. Most thought it meant to journey.
|
Specific words are used because they have a more exact/accurate meaning. A sojourn a litteral defined as a stop over or a rest. When the Israelites moved to Egypt it is said the "Sojourned there" - litterally meaning that there move was never ment to be permanent, it was just a temporary place on their way to the promised land. We make it a practice to specifically look up and explain the "fancy" words at our Seder so that we can better understant their significance.

Janelle, you have not addressed my concern. Out of 40 people at our seder, many of them with post-graduate level educations, not a single one of them knew what sojourn means. I am happy that you know what it means, after you "look it up." We do not sit at the seder with an English dictionary. The translator uses such fancy words to show off how smart he is. He should better use words that everybody understands without having to look them up. Or, we could use an Hebrew dictionary to look up the Hebrew words, and dispence with professor Shochet's translation altogether.

Come on, relax Giorgies. With all the problems in the world, why get so worked up over the innocent selection of a word? Regarding all those people you know with "post-graduate level educations", I suggest they read more books, and they will encounter "sojourn" as well as many other very beautiful and useful words.
Literacy is a good thing. Ignorance is nothing to boast about. Have a great holiday!

If you do not use the full range of the English language you are in danger of having to slavishly explain each nuance of the smaller fund of words used. Vocabulary defines the person as much as clothes or appearance, to seem dull by not using the full richness of the greatest language is a poor choice.

I love difficult words,as I have to learn every day. Language to speak well Is a verry true blessing. Braille, such as raised dots is difficult to learn. Be learning to find meanings to difficult meanings, don't be shy to ask. There is always someone who will respect you to learn.Keep encouraging each other daily. G-D BLess

Is there a place online that I can download Dayenu? My family and I always lose the tune after a couple of verses.
