Oh, Chanukah
The version I remember went like this, starting at the second part:
Gather round the table, we'll give you a treat
Dreidles to play with and latkes to eat
And while we are dancing, the candles are
burning low, one for each night,
they shed their sweet light to remind us of days long ago.

Chanukah song
Thank you for this site. I sent the Oh, Chanukah, Oh Chanukah song to my grandson Benjamin who is three. I sing it to him and he loves it. I remember the same version as the one Ginger posted below, and that is the one I sing.

Oh, Chanukah
Thanks for the lyrics and text of this nice song. In Belgium, it is not always so easy to find texts and songs. We have a cd with 20 Chanukah songs (Chanoeka in Dutch), the texts of which we are currently translating into Dutch. This song is - strangely enough - not on our cd but we shall add it to our translations. In case you are interested to receive these Dutch translations, please drop us an e-mail. And, above all: HAPPY CHANOEKA !

song Oh, Chanukah! Oh Chanukah!
My 5 year daughter loves to sing along and hear this song, over and over again. I kept hearing this song coming from the computer, and I would look in on her to see her sitting quietly as if trans, singing quietly to this song.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE YIDDISH
I am unquestionably not a linguist...but I did speak a very rudimentary Yiddish all throughout childhood with "meine bubbe." Later in college, I studied 6 undergraduate credits of Yiddish. I've done some quick research and will attempt to provide a Yiddish to English translation. I love this wonderful Yiddisher leidele [little song]....Chanukah oy Chanukah a yontiv a shayner [Chanukah oh Chanukah a holiday a beautiful one]...A lustiker a fraylecher [A merry a happy]...nitu noch azoyner [not there another like it]...Alle tug een draydle shpeilin meir [Every day in draydel we play]...Hayse gitte latkes essen meir [Hot good latkes we eat]...Geshvinder [Faster]....Tzindt kinder [Turn children]....de Chanukah lechtelech uhn [the Chanukah lights on]....Lomeir alle een aynem [Let's all in one- together]....Dus yontov dem shaynem [This holiday the beautiful one].....Zingen un tantzen een kuhn [Sing and dance in the round- the circle]

song translations
Is there a better literal translation from the Yiddish? I know that Yom tov a shaina means a pretty holiday, not come light the menorah. I also know that translating from Yiddish, we often lose a lot, but your English translation here looks like it is taken from a similar O Chanukah song...which says 'gather round the table we'll give you a treat, dreydils to play with and latkes to eat" I think it is the same song...?

song lyrics
I used to sing a song when I was a child in the school choir.
it went soemthing like this:
Tis the week of Hannukah, good cheer we are

bringing,
This holiday we celebrate with dancing and

singing,
Gather 'round together the Horah we'll do,
Then join in the song that our forefathers knew.

But hush now, and come now,
the candles we light one by one.
And then hear the story of God and his Glory,
and how precious freedom was won.

wha is the name of this song?

Tis the Week of Hanukkah Lyrics
For Tom -
I used to sing this same song in the school choir duing holiday programs. I am a Christian and I still love this song! I grew up with many Jewish friends that remain some of my closest friends today and this was a nice way to connect with them during the celebration of Hanukkah. Just goes to show you can mix church and state without all of us ending up emotionally damaged for life!
