Your site a true blessing
Through your site I am beginning to know who I am, and why – so many questions and your allowed me to find some answers. I was raised without faith identity - Jewish on my mothers side and goy on my fathers side. I had minimal exposure to my Jewish heritage, but now I know I am Jewish, both by choice and by birth. Let the work begin… know I can count on your site as one of many resources

Chanukah blessings for the Menorah
Hi I just wanted to say hello and that this site is great for Jewish people who can't read Hebrew yet but want to start being observant. I moved to Australia three years ago and my husband is Aussie and we are both Jewish, but my husband never learned hebrew, so now he is trying to learn blessings and about Judaism and we observe the holidays and so this site will definitely help us with the lighting of the Menorah! Thanks,

Excellent review for those of us who are a bit rusty on ceremony. As our Talmudic rabbi in our adult education class states: "More than Halacha, it's our tradition and ceremony that has kept Judaism alive." For many of us, our religious education stopped prematurely, and did not keep up with our secular studies. Thank you for our second chance to reaquaint ourselves to Jewish practice and observance. Yasher koach.

RENEWED
This is the first time I've celebrated chunukah in my life. I'm of Jewish blood but we never celebrated growing up, to our shame but I swore that I would start this tradition now in my later years... Thanks to your site I've gotten all the insight that's needed to celebrate and praise G-d. Bless you for a wonderful site to share with all...

Chanukah prayers
I have been , for the most part a non-practicing Jew, but still feeling a love for G-d. Six weeks ago I became a proud grandmother, for the first time of a half Jewish, half Luthern grandson. Although I know it's up to the parents to guide their son, I feel a need to show him a little also. Since this is his first Chanukah / Christmas and Christmas has so much glitter to it, and lights hold so much attraction for him now, this would be a good time to start his education. The prayers are helpful to me because I have no formal religious training. Having them in the format you provide makes it so much easier.
Thank you.

Thank you so very much
I am going through a period of loneliness that I have never experienced in my life before. It has lasted a few years until I realized my emptinessis because of my need for a closeness to my people and I never realized how those that are a part of the Chabad are so non-judgemental and at least so far the Rabbi has accepted me as a part of the family instead of making me feel as if I am far apart from the congregation. My Mother is 92 but has been getting sicker as time goes by. I thank the Rabbi for his loving acceptance and for G-d's love and constant support I have received even though I need to improve my days and times I worship as I find I am not able to go the the Chabad but rather I have to pray at my home. Again, I thank you all for just being here and organizing as a large family rather than a large building with no character, warmth or feeling of love that comes from it.

A wonderful Chanukah and my love to all. And a very special "Thank You" to Rabbi Bukiet.

Shalom, Mike

Chanukah traditions
Having grown up in a non-religious family and now being married to a non-religious catholic (lower case on purpose!) we have developed our own rituals for the winter holidays that certainly revolve around light. We do light the menorah and each night we assign a miracle to each candle. Just thought I'd share.

Thank you for your site as we do fumble through the traditional Hebrew prayers as well.

Is it ok
I am have a shop in Amsterdam Holland. I am not Jewish. We decorate our shop for Christmas, but I would also like to have a Menorah and light the candels and post the meaning of chanukah. Out of respect and to further the understanding between faiths. Would I be offending anyone if I was to do this ? I would also say the prays you have outline and follow the information you have posted. Please let me know if this would be wrong.

Deepest appreciation and thanks
Blessings should be our life.

The Three Blessings are at the same time simple and profound.
An enrichment for my soul and a path for my life.
I recognize that they came to me as a gift.
Love for life, love for our ancestors, love for others and loving G-d.
My appreciation and Blessings to you !

Blessings

Thankyou very much, the best for me to learn and understand the prayer especially in all three versions, G-d is doing miracles every day, but not everyone can recognize them and understand them in the right way. (See kiss of Esau) A kiss which is given, must be understand for love and sincerity.
I am with you and I will open my mouth to speak and you will get another miracle.
Sincerly yours

pronunciation
I see 2 pronunciations in different sources, either "LA-z'man hazeh, or LI-z'man hazeh.

Does the LA imply that there is the article (HA) before zeman, and does LI imply that the article is not present, except in HAzeh, as in the construct form? Which is more commonly used? I grew up with LA (Ashkenazic, if that makes a difference in this case)

Chag Sameach!

my first chanukah

Chanukah
Many years ago (1969) the Lubavitch community sent me a small phamphlet that, in addition to the nightly Chanukah prayers, also included a small paragraph for each night that dedicated that night to specific tenents that we celebrated (i.e. one night was dedicated to family, another to charity, a third to learning, and etc.). In my moving across the country I have lost it and sorely miss it now that this wonderful time of year is again upon us. I would very much appreciate it if this site could post them.
A Happy Chanukah to all who celebrate and may they all remember that miricles are still all around us if only we take the time to see G_ds hand.
Shalom

Shalom !
I just called and left a hearty "Happy Chanukah" with your help of pronounciation and spelling for a dear friend celebrating this holy day. As a gentile I feel a kindred spirit with my Jewish friends ..... my Lord was raised with the traditions and customs of the Jews. The Old Testiment is part of my Bible. My mom's best friend is Jewish and we would always celebrate our holidays together. Yours is a rich and sacred faith. Shalom !

If you ever get around to it, it would be great to have the prayers recited also by a native hebrew speaker at normal speed. As someone who learned the prayers in Israel as a little girl but has since forgotten many, it would be easier to follow along.

Thanks much!

Wanting connection
I don't know what else to say, other than I am so happy to have found your site. My ex-husband sent it to me. I grew up in Montreal, and now live a rural village in the province of British Columbia, and am probably the only Jewish person around. Apart from being legally blind, I feel quite isolated. I will be checking this site frequently! My Hebrew name is Malcha...

Lost Menorah
So the woman could not find the menorah. she stacked these littles round candels on top of each other until she had a sort of Pyramid' One candle on either end and the second with two and then the middle one with 5 little round candles underneath one that was burning. All in all anyone from the Bais Des Ange in Nice France would have felt homesick.

In the end she saw me writing this report and she began to cry and said " I just tried to keep Ha=shems commandment as best as I could."

Chanukah
This site is most excellent. I will consult it in the future. We did observe, albeit not as perfectly as outlined here, by lighting what I THOUGHT were only two candles and explaining the importance of the holiday but, guess what, a third candle caught on fire by itself (I lie not!) and so tonite we do four. It was our first night last night for doing the lighting with my foster children along with doing our tree. I will have to explain my error. I think we'll also play the dreidel game since the youngest (9) asked about it all night.

i found this site looking for a guide on how to pronounce the hebrew because the canadian band "Barenaked Ladies" did a song called 'Hanukkah Blessings' which is amazing. As a gentile who grew up with NO jewish influence around, it brings up a little feeling about how a jewish person would feel with all of the christain fan fair of christmas would feel during christmas. ths site was very helpful in allowing me to sing along and learn the correct way to recite the hebrew prayers since i have not had to sing hebrew since school choir. thank you

Judaism
Having supported Chabad with attendance and dollars, I find it refreshing that all the Chabad Rabbis are indeed scholars and dedicated men of GOD. Their wives are equally dedicated to Jews and their children because of their home schooling will never end up in a prison except to nurture other souls who have lost their path of rightiousness. May G-d bless their organization and the souls of the Rabbi and Rebbetzin of Mumbai in their life long dedication to better understand man's existance and purpose on this earth.

Although Chanukah celebrates events which took place only some 150 years before the common era began, the first Menorah blessing is:

Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.

Perhaps a naive question, but how do we know that Hashem Himself so commanded us, other perhaps than that He surely inspires/influences all earthly activity?
