Av 20 is the yahrtzeit (anniversary of the passing) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (1878-1944), in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union.

During the summer months, from the Shabbat after Passover until the Shabbat before Rosh Hashahah, we study a weekly chapter of the Talmud's Ethics of the Fathers ("Avot") each Shabbat afternoon; this week we study Chapter Five.

Daily Thought

Every step along the way, keep one thing in mind: The same G‑d who runs the big, wide world is without a doubt the same G‑d who runs the little world of each one of us.

Just as He knows what is going on in the macrocosmos, so He is well aware of what is happening in your microcosmos. And you can rely on Him to direct it for the good.

It is up to you not to mess things up. And how can a person mess up G‑d’s plans? By stubbornly grasping the wheel, as though you alone are the captain of the ship.
