The historic central synagogue in Bobruisk, Belarus, was vandalized twice in the past week, with the vandalism occurring just a year after renovations began to restore the building to its former glory.
According to a report by Radio Free Europe/Radio Free Liberty Belarus, vandals left anti-Semitic graffiti on the synagogue’s fence sometime between Thursday night and early Friday morning. Two days later, someone threw rocks at the synagogue, breaking several windows. A swastika was also found scrawled on the building, leading secretary Maya Savatseyeva to tell reporters that “the inscriptions insult human dignity.”
Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Shaul Habobo, the city’s chief rabbi, said that the local government is providing security for the synagogue while the police continue to search for the perpetrators.
“Everything is pretty much repaired,” he said. “Thank G-d, we have put this behind us.”
