Popular Seattle, Wash., caterer Leah’s Catering and the Stroum Jewish Community Center have launched a Purim-themed fundraising drive to benefit earthquake relief in Haiti.

Called “Hamentachen for Haiti,” the project, which launched on Monday, will send 100 percent of profits from the sales of the traditional jam-filled holiday cookie to the Chabad Haiti Relief Fund operated by Chabad-Lubavitch of the Dominican Republic.

Leah Jaffee, whose catering company was voted “Best Caterer” by readers of the local Jewish newspaper, said that the cookies will be offered in five flavors, and will be available in locations across the Seattle area.

Her idea for the campaign joins synagogue-based and Jewish community efforts across North America that have been sending money and supplies to victims of last month’s devastating quake.

“Money, more than my physical presence, is needed at this time,” said Jaffee. “I hope to spend time [this summer] cooking in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, we’ll bake hamentachen.”

The Jewish holiday of Purim, which recalls the events told in the biblical Book of Esther, occurs this year on the night of Feb. 27. For more information, click here.
