Russian City Sees First Kosher Restaurant

Fresh off the grand opening of its newly renovated community center, the Jewish community of Ulyanovsk, Russia, welcomed its first kosher restaurant.

Conceived by Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Yosef Marozov, the Volga River city’s chief rabbi, as a way to strengthen the observance of Jewish dietary laws, and to provide a hangout for Jewish youth and a celebration hall for community members, Café Jerusalem hosted a conference of regional Hillel leaders last week.

The restaurant’s owners have committed to keep prices on the menu significantly lower than non-kosher establishments in Ulyanovsk.

The Jewish community of Ulyanovsk is a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
