The satellite has been destroyed and we do not yet know whether any water has been found. But as I thought about this tremendous expenditure in the name of finding a tiny bit of water, a few parallels came to mind about our lives as Jews...
It always bothered me about the prohibitive expenditure involved in this type of bravery. I am only a layman to comment on the mission of this type. However, it is not worthwhile to spend this kind of money on finding water whilst G-d bestowed us with enough water to survive.
Scientisits for a long time mulls about living beings (human beings) in the celestial beings (moon, mars, jupiter). This is a mundane task because G-d has not given any prohetic revelation about its possibility, neither have we been provided with Prophets or Sages in this plane.

This obscene amount of spending is done by the same government that would refuse medical care for an elderly person because it's not worth spending so much money for a short life.

Dear Rabbi:
What should we do to remain connected to the L Cross signals to benefit from the life-giving, nourishing water, should there be any remaining. Kindly guide us to stay tuned.

It's more than about a single drop of water. It's a small step in ascertaining whether it's feasible to build a base on the moon for Humans. Our future is in the Stars - Open your mind up!

"the same government that would refuse medical care for an elderly person because it's not worth spending so much money for a short life."
This is ridiculous. The government you are talking about provides medical care to millions of elderly persons through a little program called medicare, and has not pulled the plug on one yet because he or she was "not worth the money."
Finding water on the moon would be a tremendous boon to enabling future travel there, because it would mean that rocket fuel for the return trip would not need to be sent there in order to bring home the people---and anything else we want to bring back to earth.
